youtube : Heather McCain - advocacy & accessibility
We’re spicing things up for today’s interview and posting on YouTube! Check out the video below or clicking here.
On this episode I’m joined by Heather McCain from CAN SERVICES (Citizens for Accessible Neighbourhoods). Heather came highly recommended from Maggie Anderson of Grace Club (find Maggie’s episode here) because of her work of calling in organizations to create safe, accessible and inclusive spaces for all.
Heather shares how she went from a sporty, free and fast 17 year old to being wheelchair bound for most of her 20’s. She talks about visible vs invisible disabilities and feeling the need to prove a disability.
Heather recounts the serious let downs with TransLink that led her on the path of an unabashed advocate for people living with disabilities.
We review PC terminology, proper etiquette and how businesses and individuals can be in allyship.
Heather is the executive director of citizens for accessible neighbourhoods, disability and inclusion accessibility consultant and a disability awareness instructor. Heather was a 2010 paralympic torch bearer and stand in DJ for a local radio station.
