podcast : Dora Kamau - psych & self-care
On this episode, I’m joined by Dora Kamau from Bliss Your Heart. Dora and I connected through Feelosophy and the recent rad-ass event that was YESxSAJE : self-care self-love unplugged. I was immediately drawn to Dora’s approach to self-care and her own, unique story.
Dora shares her soul mission of guiding women to wellness and wholeness and the story of becoming a self-care advocate. We discuss the gaps in the mental health system and how practitioners are not set up to support people of colour. We go straight into how different cultures perceive and approach spanking and the predicament it creates in the perception of love.
Dora opens up about her experience of masking underlying emotional issues with restrictive eating and overexercising. Then probably one of my fav parts was when she shared her past dating history (it’s f*cking wild) and how she discovered her role in the repetitive experiences.
Coming off hot from our panel discussion themed around self-care, Dora explains to me how the ‘self-care’ industry failed and continues to fail women of colour. Something Dora spoke about that resonated with the audience was the difference between boundaries and barriers so she gives us a snippet on the podcast.
Dora is a workshop facilitator, storyteller and a dope-ass (almost) full fledge psychiatric nurse. Dora is passionate about elevating the conversation of mental wellness and guiding individuals to their true meaning of ‘self-care’.
